Visa-free entry vs visa requiredThe Mongolian e-visaRegistration for longer staysPassport and entry requirementsPractical tips

Whether you need a visa for Mongolia depends on your nationality and on the length and purpose of your stay. Citizens of some countries can visit visa-free for a limited period, others can apply online for an e-visa, and some must apply at a Mongolian embassy or consulate. Because these rules have changed several times in recent years, always confirm the current requirements with the Mongolian Immigration Agency and the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you travel.

          Visa-free entry vs visa required

Mongolia has bilateral and unilateral visa-exemption arrangements with a range of countries. Under these, eligible passport holders can enter as tourists for a set number of days without arranging a visa in advance. The list of countries, and the number of days allowed, differ from one arrangement to another and have been extended or adjusted from time to time, including through temporary visa-free schemes introduced to promote tourism.

If your country is not covered, you will need a visa before you arrive. Do not rely on a list in a blog post or an old guidebook, including this page: check the official sources, or ask the Mongolian embassy or consulate that serves your country.

          The Mongolian e-visa

Mongolia operates an electronic visa (e-visa) system for many nationalities, which lets you apply online instead of visiting an embassy. Typically you complete an application form, upload a passport scan and photo, pay a fee and receive an approval to print or show on arrival. Processing times, fees, eligible nationalities and permitted entry points are set by the authorities and can change. Use only the official government e-visa system and be wary of third-party sites that charge extra.

Visas for purposes other than tourism, such as business, work, study or long-term family stays, usually require an invitation from a Mongolian organisation or citizen and are handled through the Immigration Agency.

          Registration for longer stays

Foreign visitors who stay in Mongolia beyond a certain number of days must register with the Immigration Agency within a set period after arrival. For many years the rule has been that visitors staying more than 30 days register within 7 days of arriving, but confirm the current thresholds before you travel. Registration is done at the Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar (or through local branches and online services where available). If you leave without registering when you should have, you may face a fine and delays at departure.

Overstaying your visa or visa-free period is treated seriously. Fines are charged and you can be prevented from leaving until they are paid, so keep track of your permitted days, especially if your plans change.

          Passport and entry requirements

          • Passport validity: your passport should normally be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with blank pages for stamps. Check the current requirement, as airlines may refuse boarding otherwise.
          • Onward travel: border officers can ask for proof of onward or return travel and details of where you are staying.
          • Land borders: not every crossing is open to foreigners or open all year. If you plan to enter overland from Russia or China, confirm that your crossing accepts third-country nationals and, if you hold an e-visa, that it is valid there.
          • Border zones: some areas near the borders require a separate permit, which tour operators usually arrange.

          Practical tips

Check the rules for your passport two to three months before departure, then check again a week before you fly. Keep printed copies of your e-visa or visa approval, your accommodation details and your return ticket. If you travel with a tour operator, ask what they can help with, such as invitation letters or border-zone permits, but remember that you remain responsible for holding the correct visa. Dual nationals should travel on the passport they used to apply.

          Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Mongolia?

It depends on your nationality. Some passport holders can visit visa-free for a limited time, others need an e-visa or an embassy visa, so check with the Mongolian Immigration Agency.

Do foreigners have to register in Mongolia?

Yes, if you stay longer than the set period. For many years visitors staying over 30 days registered within 7 days of arrival, but confirm the current rule.

How long must my passport be valid for Mongolia?

Usually at least six months beyond your arrival date. Confirm with your airline and the official sources before you travel.
